Spiral Chapter 05
About ten weeks later.
Joshua reached for a green polo shirt from his closet but when he bend down to pick up his shoes, his eyes immediately went to the single black stiletto pump next to the rest of his, waiting for it's mate. It reminded him of Cinderella except he was no Prince Charming and she was a thief...a thief who stole $5000 cash and one of his favorite white business shirts. Every time he thought about it, he got angry. How could he have been so stupid?
Joshua sat down on the edge of his bed and thought back again to that night. Him sitting at the bar downing down a Bacardi Mojito when she came rushing in. The next thing he knew, he was in a hotel room with her, frantically stripping off her clothes while she did the same to him. They were both tipsy that night but he remembered asking her if she really wanted to do this to which she replied 'Yes.' All he wanted that night was not to be alone.
He hadn't been with a woman in more than a year and the need for an escape was overwhelming. What he didn't want was to loose the $5000 he just earned for his company. He also didn't want to be tormented by the constant reminder of how she felt in his arms. Her lips were the softest he'd ever kissed or so he thought. Her skin was the smoothest he'd ever felt or so he thought. He remembered the desperation in her touch, so similar to his and knew that she also didn't want to be alone that night. Thank the heavens he'd used a condom and when he'd gotten tested last month, he was still clean.
'I need to let this go and throw away that damn shoe,' but he knew that wasn't going to happen, at least not now.
Just as Josh was getting into his SUV, his phone rang. It was Perry calling and he answered it immediately. He'd asked Perry to look over the papers for the loan he was planning on taking out against his home so he figured the call was about that.

"'Morning Perry."
"'Morning Josh. How are things going?"
"Okay. What's going on?"
"Can you see me before you go to work this morning?"
"Yeah sure. Is everything okay?"
"We'll discuss it when you get here."
Josh didn't like the sound of that but he agreed none-the-less.
((~~!~~))
Josh was shown to Perry office by his assistant.
"Hey Josh, thanks for stopping by," Perry said coming to greet Josh as he entered his office.
"Did I have a choice?"
Perry laughed. "Yes you did. Everyone always has choices Josh...its just to live with the ones we've made." Josh nodded his agreement. "Well let's get down to business. I have both good and bad news, so I'll begin with the bad. I don't think you'll get the loan. No one in this economy is going to loan money to a business that doesn't have enough working coming in. You're house wouldn't be any good since the banks are already flooded with homes they can't get rid of."
"Shit." Josh didn't know what to do right now. It was almost official; he'd have to cut his staff or better yet close his doors.
"No Josh wait....I'm willing to make you a personal loan." Josh looked up at Perry a bit shocked hearing that. He was about to say something when Perry continued. "The other bad news is with your books. I don't know if it's just a small accounting error that's gone one unchecked but your books are not accurate therefore I'm going to have to see your books anonymously for the last two years."
"That won't be a problem but why do you want to see them anonymously? Do you suspect David of doing something?" Josh sighed. "Perry, I thought..."
"....Josh, I don't like the guy but you came to me for help. Me not liking David doesn't mean I'm going to screw with your livelihood. There is an accounting problem going on with your book that needs to be addressed. You can't go to any bank and ask for a loan with this type of error on file. If I look at them in detail, I may be able to find the error and I don't want to step on David's toes, BUT....if he's missed it for this long then he probably needs a fresh set of eyes to see it, catch it and fix it."
Perry went to his desk and picked up the folder which held Josh's company's paperwork, and handed the papers to Josh.
"See the numbers I've highlighted?" At Josh's nodding, he continued, "Well those numbers are in the red or the negative, only they should have been in positive. Based on what I've seen so far, you're short approx $50 to $60 thousand dollars." Josh looked up sharply at Perry. "It may be more or less give or take."
Josh couldn't believe what he was hearing. Granted he didn't look at the book everyday. It wasn't his specialty. He'd always been more interested in the creative part of the company more than the monetary side and so was happy have David along to give that side the detailed attention it required. But now he was hearing that something was amiss and he didn't know who he could trust. Could it be Sarah? She was the only other person besides David who did anything with the books.
"Perry, the only people who handle anything with the account is David and Sarah and..."
"...Who's Sarah, your accountant?"
"She helps David out with the books. Does thing like the payroll and such but she's..." Josh sighed.
"...Josh let's not make any assumptions until I've seen the books and that way we'll know for sure what's going on. Like I said, It could be just a simple accountant error that's just threw the books off and a new pair of eyes caught it."
Perry knew this news wasn't good for Josh as he was under a lot of pressure trying to keep his business afloat, so he hoped the next bit of news would change his day a bit.
"Okay now for the really good news."
Josh looked at Perry skeptically. He didn't think that was possible and didn't get his hopes up.
"I know of a company that got the go ahead to launch a new cosmetic line. They are looking for a good ad team and I recommended you." Josh looked up sharply. "Now other companies are bidding for the contact but I managed to get you the first meeting with them only you have to have something in a week. I know its short notice but I just got the news yesterday and was only able to confirm it last night which is why I needed to see you first thing this morning. Do you think you could do it?"
'Think he could do it? Fuck yeah...' "Absolutely! I'll get everyone to pitch in and I'll have it done by the weekend."
Josh was shocked. He couldn't believe his luck was about to change. There was no way this contract was going to get away from him. He wanted to get the information and get started on it right away. He stood and Perry followed from his resting position on the edge of his desk.
"Thank you Perry, I don't know what to say."
"Here's the file," Perry reached behind him to give Josh the folder with the information about the bidding ad. "Just make sure you do something fantastic. I put my reputation on the line for you. Don't make me look bad."
Josh shook Perry hand. "Perry, you have my word. Thank you." He took the folder and turned to leave.
"Josh, remember your ledgers."
"Yeah...sure," Josh said absently. He was already looking at the information in the folder, "I'll bring them by later on this week."
As Josh got into the elevator, he felt as if a window has been opened to him and he felt grateful for the friend he's once again found in Perry. He just hoped it worked out this time.
((~~!~~))
"Hello Kamea," Dr. Robinson greeted as she came though the door.
"Hello Dr. Robinson."
"How have you been doing?"
"Okay I guess. I've been a bit tired and not feeling well on and off, but I think it's because I've been worried about not finding a job. I was throwing up the last few days but I think that's because of Sarah's cooking."
Dr. Robinson laughed as she looked at the file. "I know what you mean. I have had a girlfriend in college that couldn't cook. It took some getting use to and a lot of teaching on my part. But at least she tried."
"Yes, that's true, Sarah is trying."
"And don't worry so much on the job, have faith, something will turn up." She paused for a moment, "You've lost some weight." Dr. Robinson got a pair of gloves. "Are you ready to get started?"
Kamea layed back and placed her legs in the stirrups. But suddenly Dr. Robinson stopped.
"Kamea you can get dressed. I'm sending in my nurse to get some blood and I'll see you in my office."
Puzzled Kamea asked, "Blood? Why is something wrong?"
"Oh I'm sure it's nothing. I want to run a quick test and I get better results from blood. I know you're afraid of needles but it's necessary."
Dr. Robinson left after giving the orders to the nurse who was assisting her.
Kamea was beginning to worry.
((~~!~~))
All of Josh's employees were gathered in his office. He'd just told everyone to settle down and was waiting for them to comply. David was just as surprised by the meeting since Josh hadn't told him what was going on either. When every one was finally quiet, he began.
"Thank you all for joining me not that you had a choice," everyone laughed, "But I think I may have some good news for everyone but I need your help, all your help. I've just found out that a new cosmetic company is looking for an inexpensive ad company and we've been chosen to present an ad to them." Everyone began speaking again. "Guys....guys...wait let me finish. The biding ad is for eye shadow therefore I'm looking to all the women to give your ideas as to what you like and don't like about the ads you see in the market place and of the cosmetics you wear, all the women, including you Sarah." Josh looked at Sarah when saw her turn away but was genuinely surprised at the absolute joy which spread across her face at being included.
"Of course...yes," Sarah replied stun but happy.
"Josh, I'm sure...."
"You're not the only woman who works for the company Darlene and I need all my team players on broad with this project. We need to land this account therefore I want everyone to pitch in."
Darlene's fuming that Sarah would be allowed to participate didn't go unnoticed by Josh, David or Sarah. Even though Josh needed to keep the peace, he was planning on watching Darlene very closely. He hadn't forgotten what David had said about her taking a large account away if she helped to land it.
"Okay everyone I need ideas and I need them in the next two days, then we'll spend some time picking the best idea and then doing the ad for presenting in the next four days. We need this account guys so I need all of you to work together on this please."
He hoped Darlene and Sarah could hear the plea he'd made.
((~~!~~))
Kamea was looking at herself in the mirror as she tried once again to remember that night she'd spent with the handsome stranger. She remembered him paying for her drinks but she didn't remember if she had two or three. Whenever she went out with Sarah, the most she had was one drink. Sarah was the drinker of the two; Kamea was paranoid of being drugged. So if she wanted anything else after that one drink it was a bottle of water. What she did remember was her body feeling alive but that must have been because of the alcohol. She remember him asking if she really wanted to do this and her reply was 'yes'. She had wanted to feel like a sexually desirable woman even it was only for one night. Glimpses and images of that night came flooding through her mind, images of her holding on to his arms as he moved over her dominant and hard. Her hands reaching for his head as she fused their lips together in a demanding kiss. The tenderness between her thighs that didn't leave for days and the constant need that seemed to persist.
She ran her hand over his shirt that hung in her closet. It had been washed and ironed but she just couldn't get rid of it even if she'd never see him again. Somehow it reminded her that even if only for a night, some guy had found her attractive enough to spend the night. Faint remnants of his scent still lingered even though she knew it would fade with time. But now more than ever, she wouldn't be able to get rid of it.
Her front door opened and Sarah's screaming for her, made her hurriedly replace the shirt and hurry to see what was wrong.
"Sarah...what's wrong?"
"He wants all of us to help. That includes me and he told Darlene today." Sarah was breathing heavily.
"Sarah calm down and tell me what's going on."
Sarah took two deep breathes and swallowed hard. "Josh is in the running to get this new cosmetic contact," still breathing heavily, "and he held a staff meeting today and told everyone...he wanted ALL of us to pitch in, even me. He especially wanted the women to pitch in since its cosmetic brand but when Darlene tried to object, he shut her down and told her he wanted me to participate. And he did it in front of everyone. This is my way in Kamea. You were right, all I had to do was wait and I now have a way in. I'm so happy."
Sarah squealed and hugged Kamea tightly. It was as if she'd won the lottery.
"I get to show everyone that Darlene doesn't know shit about advertising."
"Sarah no." Sarah looked at Kamea with wide eye astonishment. "You are already good enough and don't need to prove anything to Darlene. Don't do this for revenge Sarah but for yourself. Do the best job for you. Darlene has already failed. She did that when she stole your idea and claimed it as her own."
Sarah fell back on Kamea's bed. "You're such a kill joy."
Kamea laughed and joined her on the bed. "Yes I know but I want this to go well for you. It's hard I know but put your efforts into proving yourself, let the universe take care of Darlene."
Both women looked up at the ceiling, Kamea thinking she should tell Sarah about her doctor's visit and Sarah thinking about how good it would feel to rub Darlene's face in her victory.
Suddenly Sarah sat up and turned to look down at Kamea. "I'm recommending you for my job when I move into the ad department. So gear up, you may have a job soon."
Kamea laughed. "We'll cross that bridge when we get there. Now what do you want for dinner?"
((~~!~~))
"I don't see why he needs to get a copy of the books. I don't like how he suddenly wants to go through our stuff. If his bank isn't giving us the loan then he has no reason to look at it."
David didn't like what Josh was telling him. He didn't like Perry. Perry was one of those guys who came from a middle class family background but you could see the determination in him that he was going to make something great of himself. He'd always hated the easy friendship that he always seem to have with Josh and now that he was back it was only a matter of time before Josh became all buddy, buddy with him again.
"With the way things stand, I need him to look over the book to see what kind of loans I can get to help save the company. He's helping me out here David and I need all the help I can get at the moment. I want a copy of the files and I would like them today."
"Are you ordering me to do this?"
"Do I have to?" Josh sighed and put down the pencil he was using to sketch one of the visuals for the ad. "David, I know you and Perry have never gotten along but Perry has forgotten all about what happened back then. Let it go and give me the information so he can help keep the doors of my business open."
David knew he didn't have any real grounds for arguing with Josh so he conceded at least for now. But he was going to keep his eyes on Perry and stop whatever plan he's trying to hatch. Josh was too trusting and he didn't want Perry putting any ideas in his head. That would only lead to a very bad situation.
"I'll have it for you in a few hours." David turned to leave.
"Thank you."
((~~!~~))
"Wow Sarah, these are wonderful." Josh was amazed at the sketches in front of him. Sarah's sketches for the first ad were just brilliant and seemed so full of energy. He loved it. He looked over at her and saw the wide eye look of astonishment and he thought he'd never seen her smile so brightly. There was a light in her eyes that made her seem to come alive from the inside out.
"Darlene, did you see these?" He turned to Darlene who had been fuming from she saw Sarah sketches. Even she knew they were better than hers. Nothing she had come up with was original but bits and pieces from other ads she'd seen before.
"Yes, I did...they're okay for a beginner."
"Okay? They're wonderful. I'm using them."
"What? You can't do that Josh. This is a major contact for the company. You can't use something some amateur came up with over night. You...."
"...Darlene, she may be an amateur but I know good work when I see it and I haven't seen anything this original in a long time. Don't be upset, you're last ad was good also."
Josh was looking at Sarah's drawings and didn't notice the look Sarah and Darlene exchanged with the mention of that ad. Sarah's eyes squinted in fury while Darlene beamed in satisfaction at the continued deception.
Josh looked at Sarah again. "I want you to work on the ad full time but I'll have to find someone to take over your position before you leave so..."
"...I have just the right person and she's better than I am at books and accounting," Sarah replied enthusiastically.
Josh raised his eyebrows. "Really? Okay then get me her resume and set up an interview ASAP."
He was rushing but he had a good feeling about this and he went with his gut instinct. Sarah's concept was too much of a win and if they got the contract, he would need to her devotion to the upcoming ads.
"Will do Josh. Thanks so much. I promise you won't regret any of this."
"Good. That's what I want to hear."
